Ah, love. In the budding stage of a relationship, life suddenly feels like a bed of roses and all you want to do is declare your love and affections for that special someone. You wish to shout it out to the world, just like how they do it in the movies. Saying “I love you” is so simple yet it is the strongest of all gestures that you can do for them.

According to various sources, the majority would count French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and Romanian as the top most romantic languages. Though they are often portrayed as such in movies and fiction books, they are interestingly also known as Romance languages or “in the Roman manner”. They are derived from a spoken tongue of the middle classes in Rome and the Roman provinces called Vulgar Latin that has its roots in classical Latin.

So what actually makes a language romantic? Besides the choice of words, there are many ways to set the heart aflutter like the flow of its flowery expression and even the accent that comes with it. Simply put, it’s how you say it that truly matters.
